Speeding Up a Stupidly Slow PC

11:24 PM at 11:24 PM

Computers are great when they are new. However, they can quickly turn into your biggest nightmare when they start running slow. And unfortunately, this is a problem which millions of people are having to put up with every day, thanks to a simple (but hidden) problem inside your PC.

There is a part of your computer system which is responsible for most of its slowness. It's called the 'registry' and is the most central part of Windows. The registry is a database which stores all your system files and settings, and is a very important part of your computer. It's so important, that Windows would literally not be able to run without it. And it's because of this importance, that actually makes your computer run slow. Here's why...

The registry is needed by Windows. It's got files inside it, which Windows reads "instructions" from, telling it to do certain things at certain times. The problem is that because your computer is reading these files non-stop, they actually become corrupt and damaged, over time. This is totally normal, but can spell disaster for your PC.

You see, because your computer cannot operate without these registry files, any delay in finding them will actually affect the speed of your PC. This is because your computer spends more time trying to find the missing files, which delays everything else. Over time, this problem gets worse and worse, as more and more files become missing or corrupt. It's the biggest reason as to why your computer is running slow, and is also very easy to fix.

To fix this problem (and speed up your PC), you simply need to clean out all the damaged files inside the registry. This is impossible for a human to do, because there are 100,000 files inside the database, but it's actually very easy for a registry cleaner to do. These registry cleaners are basically small pieces of software which scan through the entire registry database. They single out all the corrupt or missing files, and fix them all for you. This speeds your computer up dramatically, and keep it running fast.

Graceful Aging For Desktop Computers

11:19 PM at 11:19 PM

Is My Desktop Computer Aging?

There are a few definite signs that show when desktop computers are aging:

* Your processor speed cannot keep up with the demands of your operating system or impedes daily tasks, like word processing, browsing the internet, and playing games.
* Your RAM is insufficient for your computing needs.
* You worry about security features, because your operating system is older and cannot use up-to-date anti-virus protection.
* You find that websites are not displaying properly on your aging monitor. (Note that you are likely increasing your energy bill and impacting the environment if your monitor is older.)
* You can no longer install new software and wish to use something that causes an error that reads "Operating System not supported" or your hardware causes similar messages.
* You cannot use newer peripherals, because there are no USB ports on your PC.
* You find that you've run out of storage space on your computer.

I Don't Want To Replace My Desktop Computer

However, one or more of these signs may not mean that these desktop computers need to be sent into the landfill sites. There are other solutions.

* Replace your processor. Even if your motherboard will not support the newest processors on the market, plenty of resale and refurbishment computer stores stock older motherboards and processors. You could increase your PC's abilities with an inexpensive, second hand processor.
* Increasing the RAM on your desktop computer can be an inexpensive fix. Most computers have extra slots available for just this purpose.
* Who says you can't just replace your monitor? All peripherals can be updated without going to the expense of an entirely new machine.
* Hard drives have dropped in price in recent years. Replacing your hard drive or adding a hard drive may solve your storage woes and extend the life of your machine.

Updating your desktop computers' processor, RAM, or hard drive may fix your computing woes.

Gifts for notebook owners

12:27 PM at 12:27 PM

Maybe it was difficult for you to buy the right present for the people you love. But ever since electronic accessories have become part of our everyday life, you just can’t go wrong with gadgets as gifts for almost everybody you know! They are the trend of the 21st century and every friend you have will certainly appreciate them. Companies are constantly improving and upgrading their electronic products and we all know that it is difficult to resist the temptation of something that is better, smaller and has more functions than the previous model.

Gadgets are everywhere around us, in our homes, offices, stores, medical offices, government buildings and even in our cars. During the last 20 years or so, our lives were made easier by all sorts of electronic products, like cell phones, pagers, answering machines, digital cameras, computers, coffee machines, microwave ovens. People love to browse the Internet or the stores that sell smart accessories and love it even more when they receive this kind of gifts. They are fascinated with anything that’s new and needs figuring out. Maybe the real thrill of gadgets is in the need for discovery, play and hunt.

There is an entire list of ‘must have’ gadgets that can make precious gifts for notebook owners. Everyone who has a notebook will appreciate a beautiful and functional notebook bag. The best bags are the top-loading ones secured by a flap or a zipper. A good alternative are the rolling pilot cases which offer more protection and are less taxing from the physical point of view. You should also be attentive to choose the right bag so that the notebook does not slip or slide around. It would be perfect if you could bring your friend’s notebook with you or if you could measure it off.

Other fascinating gadgets are heat dissipating coolers or pads; they are of extreme importance because heat is the number one enemy of notebooks. Coolers can reduce with up to 15 degrees the operating temperature, but they decrease the notebook’s battery operating time. That’s why cooling pads are more recommended. In addition to this, they are slimmer, lighter and easier to carry.

The optical mouse can’t be left out from any inventory of notebook accessories. Your friends will be thrilled if you buy them gifts like that. Notebooks usually have touch pads that can be difficult to use. Luckily there is the alternative of using an optical mouse, wired or wireless, that can track movement on different surfaces. Modern mice don’t have problems with transparent, light-colored or glossy surfaces. Even if wireless mice are in fashion these days, you should consider giving wired optical mice as gifts to your friends or relatives, because they don’t need additional equipment or power to operate and their notebook will not be overloaded.

Last but not least, notebook owners will certainly be happy to receive a multi-device charger or power adapter, even if their notebooks were bought with their own adapters. The reason lies in the fact that notebook owners usually carry other gadgets with them, like digital cameras, PDAs or cell phones, and it would be very difficult for them to carry the charging devices of all these electronic products. This is why the multi-device chargers are perfect gifts for gadget fans!

Doubling Productivity with New Parking Enforcement Ticketing System

11:59 AM at 11:59 AM

Since 1995, a Portugese parking authority has created more than 40,000 limited duration parking spaces, located in 40 designated areas. Beginning in January 2001, inspectors within the designated areas have been equipped with portable ticketing terminals in order to collect and store vehicle information and to issue a fine whenever a vehicle overstays the allowed time in the space. Each small and robust touch screen terminal with barcode reader is assigned to a specific area. The inspectors pre-load data relating to residence, make, model, type and colour of vehicle, as well as the value of the fine to be issued.

When the specific data is loaded, the terminal initiates a Fine Notice through IrDA (infrared) connection to a portable receipt printer. The lightweight, battery-operated parking ticketing system, attached to the inspector's belt, allows the inspector to print up to 1270 Fine Notices per day. At the end of each day the inspector transmits a report of Fine Notices to the Central System for administrative follow-up.

After nine months use, the parking authority has announced an increase in Fine Notices of 100% over the previous year, without any additional personnel thus doubling productivity of their team!

The second phase of the project to be launched in 2002 included barcode reading of residents' Parking Permits, allowing the Inspector to check the validity of permits and issue a Fine Notice if the permit is invalid.

Variety is the Spice of Life, Even in Computers

11:15 PM at 11:15 PM

Variety in Software

At one time, the majority of computing was done on Windows-based software, almost exclusively on Microsoft products. A small group, primarily graphics-intensive users, used Apple products and an even smaller group, mostly scientists and academics, used Unix for their computing needs. With the popularity in open source coding on the rise, a renewed interest in Apple products, and a growing population interested in Linux, the pendulum is swinging towards a variety for both operating systems and the software applications that go with them.

* The number of software programs that can be installed on a variety of operating systems has increased astronomically. In the past, Apple computer users were limited to a handful of programs available for that platform, limiting the market share for Apple users.
* Internet browsers were limited to one or two competitors, but there are many competitors for this market now, including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Chrome.
* Office suites were once limited to Microsoft Office and WordPerfect, with WordPerfect becoming a smaller and smaller market share. With open source coding, other options are emerging, including Google Docs, Zoho, and the most notable being OpenOffice, an entirely free package that is competing with Microsoft Office. 20% of OpenOffice users are now using this suite for work purposes, including some government offices.

Variety in Hardware

Computers have had similar pendulum swings in the popularity of their hardware, most notably in processors. At one time, all Microsoft computers relied on Intel processors and Apple computers, which were a much smaller share of the market, used Motorola processors. AMD began to compete with Intel for the market on Microsoft computers, making significant inroads during their fierce competition. A few years ago, another shift took place when Motorola was abandoned by Apple in favour of the Intel processor.

Competition and variety in computer hardware is not limited to processors, but processors are a good example of this competition, showing the swing in the marketplace and driving a portion of the technological advancement.

Why is Variety Healthy?

With variety in computer hardware and software, comes growth and new ideas in the marketplace. Not long ago, computers were functional for limited purposes and a limited time frame. As the newer models came out, the small portion of software available would cater to the new machines and it became harder to support older machines. Now that there are so many computers in use, software companies no longer cater solely to the latest and greatest, but rather the widest range of machines possible. In turn, these trends have opened up the market for resale, used, and wholesale computers and computer parts.

Find A High Quality DHTML Dynamic Color Picker

11:19 PM at 11:19 PM

Webmasters looking to create colorful graphics for their websites need to have access to a high quality DHMTML Dynamic color picker. This is exactly what ColourMod has to offer. ColourMod has been identified as the most flexible of all color pickers out there.

In recent years ColourMod has become even more robust. The features and flexibility that this DHTML dynamic color picker has to offer is bound to exceed the user’s imagination. The software is available in a number of different versions each catering to specific needs and desires. The enhanced ColourMod allows you to convert colors on your desktop as well as allowing you color picking on the web.

As mentioned above, ColourMod started out as a web based DHTML Dynamic color picker. Ever since the development of OS X from Apple, ColourMod has been upgraded to serve as a Dashboard interface. This means it is fully functional in OS X Tiger and Leopard.

With the Dashboard version of ColourMod you will have no need to open Photoshop or other graphics program anymore. Nor do you have to worry with values like RGB, CMYK and HSV. The enhanced version brings simplicity and ease of use to Mac users.

Other unique features that ColourMod endows it users with is the ability to start off with a value and get an automatic conversion. This means you can start of with RGB, CMYK or Hex value and you will automatically get its conversion. You will have the ability to select your own colors with corresponding values in all formats.

Currently the software gives you two methods of color selection. The first method is the Default color selection. This is a standard hue based color selection method. The other method is the Color Wheel selection. This is based on the color feel and functions exactly in the same way as OS X’s built in color wheel picker.

Another feature that makes things incredibly easy for web developers in particular and all users in general is the “Copy Hex to clipboard” option. This feature makes the entire color picking process a piece of cake.

As a widget ColourMod was limited to Macintosh users. The new port ColourMod to Konfabulator however opens up vistas for Windows users to take advantage of this dynamic color picker as well. Compared to the Dashboard version, the ColourMod for Kongabulator is still in its infancy. Updates are continuously being developed in order to bring ColourMod for Konfabulator up to mark with the Dashboard version.

Another version of ColourMod has been developed known as ColourMod Plug And Play. This was actually the first color picker produced. ColorMod actually revolutionized the way internet users could choose and pick colors using a web browser. With the passage of time ColourMod has been advancing and is now considered to be the easiest and fastest compact DHTML color picker. This plug in for web based applications can be used with minimal technical knowledge as it utilizes few simple code inclusions only. With ColourMod you are ready to start coloring from the start.

Why Hide My IP Address?

11:14 PM at 11:14 PM

When you talk about the Internet and web hosting, IP Address is a term that gets unlimited mention. And then you hear about two specific types commonly involved in hosting, Shared and Static IP Address. While it doesn't necessarily take an expert to figure out the difference between the two, a basic understanding of how the Internet works goes a long way in explaining things.

All computers participating in any form of Internet activity are uniquely identified by a set of numbers they are assigned. Each time you type in a domain name on your browser's address bar, you are requesting information from a domain as a set of numbers. In the same way, that domain will return your requested information by using its own set of identifying numbers as well. In other words, when you talk of Internet communication, everything happens between these sets of numbers with which a source computer and a destination computer are uniquely identified with. This unique set of numbers assigned to each computer is called an IP address.

This basic information about IP addresses will now make it possible to differentiate between Shared IP and Static IP. A Shared IP is one that is used by more than one site on the Internet while a Static IP address is one that is used by a single site. If you type in a Static IP on your browser's address bar, you will be directed to the site which owns that Static IP, but if you enter a Shared IP, you'll get to a server but not to the domain you want because this server wouldn't know which particular site you're trying to connect to.

The question is, why would you secure a Static IP and why would you be fine with a Shared IP? Basically, there is only one reason why a Static IP would be necessary - to secure sensitive information. With a Static IP, this information enters and leaves your site in coded form to avoid interception. Obviously, this is the IP address that makes e-commerce possible as well communication between government agencies and other institutions that handle confidential data.

The unfortunate truth is, whether you're using Shared or Static, hackers could still wreak havoc on your system just by detecting your IP address. The Internet itself was created to detect IP addresses because this is how communication within the network is possible. However, the technology will not limit your ability to protect yourself when surfing. And your best weapon against hackers is to hide your IP address. Hiding your IP will make it impossible for anyone to even know you're even there. And when they don't know you're there, you can go from one website to another without leaving a trail that could be traced back to you.

Building Traffic with a Blog

4:27 AM at 4:27 AM

Depending on your kind of business, this can be quite difficult. If you’re selling things that other people are selling it can be very hard to get your pages ranked. This is especially true if you’re just using standard descriptions rather than creating your own, or if you have a company generated webpage that gives you no control over these things.

One of the simplest ways to handle this is to start a blog. If you have your own domain, I strongly recommend getting the free Wordpress software (one click install on most hosts) and using that.

But if you don’t have a way to put a blog on your site, there are many free options. Blogger is quite popular, partially because it is from Google, and people feel it may get spidered more often, but also because they don’t mind you advertising on it. Some other free blogs do not want you using their sites for commercial purposes of any kind.

The danger to any free blog is that it can be deleted at any time, with little or no notice. But so long as you follow the rules this will only rarely be a problem. Hosting your own is far safer.

On your blog, you want to write posts and articles that will bring people to your blog and get them interested in your products. It is not so easy as writing blatant ads, which most people won’t read. You want to write articles that will make people want to use what you have to offer.

Free tips relevant to the products are generally a very good idea. They can be fun to write, and if you get creative and think of unusual uses, you can get people who might not have purchased your products to try them.

Most blog posts are fairly short. You don’t have to write a novel. Sometimes even just a few sentences will do… just so long as those sentences have something interesting to say.

One of the most important things about blogging to promote your business is to make sure that you post regularly. Weekly is a bare minimum, but most successful bloggers post more often than that. Some even post many times throughout the day, every day. You just have to figure out what works best for your business.

Posting on your blog is not enough. You need to ping as well. If you’re using the Wordpress software, it can be set up to ping automatically. You at the very least want to ping one of the services that will ping other sites for you.

Ok, ok, I’ll tell you what pinging is. Otherwise that last paragraph will be just nonsense to some people. A ping is a signal sent to sites that accept them, that lets them know that you have new content for them to look at.

You can do this manually by visiting sites as well. One of the most popular sites to ping is Technorati. If you sign up for an account and claim your blog, you can go in and manually ping it if you can’t figure out how to do it on your blogging software. On Wordpress software, you just have to go to Options - Writing to tell it where to ping.

Once your blog is up and running, it can be a huge help to your other site in building both traffic and sales. And you might just enjoy the blogging part of it too.

Dell Studio XPS 13

4:19 AM at 4:19 AM

The Dell XPS M1330 was a major success in lates 2007 and revitalized the Dell brand name in the eyes of consumers. The Studio XPS 13 proves that Dell has come a long way since the boring gray laptops from previous years. They’ve taken the sleek lines and brushed aluminum accents from the XPS line and combined it with the multimedia features and a few chassis design elements from the Studio line to create a solid mobile notebook. Unlike the larger 16-inch Studio XPS 16, the Studio XPS 13 is designed for people who need to keep their laptop with them at all times … but need the same high performance found in larger notebooks.

The Studio XPS 13 does a surprisingly good job balancing mobility with solid design and construction. As mentioned above, the Studio XPS 13 takes several design elements from the XPS M1330: the wedge-shaped profile, drop hinge, slot-loading optical drive, and touch-sensitive media buttons are all hallmarks of the XPS M1330. That said, the new Studio XPS 13 is thicker and heavier than the older 13-inch notebook.

The one design element I have mixed feelings about is the bottom access panel. Rather than have the typical RAM cover, hard drive cover, and main panel on the bottom of the notebook, the Studio XPS 13 uses a single, massive panel that provides access to all of the notebook at once. While this is helpful for those people who want to make multiple modifications or service their notebook it also means you have to remove 10 screws from the bottom of the notebook just to upgrade the RAM.

LILO Errors and Descriptor Table Corruption

11:10 PM at 11:10 PM

LILO or LInux LOader is the standard boot loader used for Linux systems. Irrespective of the file system type, it can be placed in boot sector of partition or MBR. When you start the system and LILO loads, it performs a series of steps and displays the word 'LILO'. With each letter you see on the screen, it implies that it has successfully completed a task. But if LILO fails at some point, you find that the complete word 'LILO' is not displayed and hence you can't boot Linux and access your data. To restore the lost data, you need to use a recent data backup. However, if data backup is not available, invalid or not up-to-date, Linux Data Recovery solutions can be used to extract the lost or inaccessible data.

Consider a scenario, you start the Linux system and the boot process halts with three letters 'LIL' on the screen. After the occurrence of this issue, you can't boot the Linux system.

Cause

The above issue occurs if descriptor table is corrupted or damaged.

The space on a Linux based hard disk is divided into blocks, which are further organized into block groups. Each of these block groups is described by a group block descriptor. Descriptor table is the index table of these group block descriptors.

Solution

To solve this issue, you need to carry out these methods:

You should first verify that disk parameters in BIOS (Basic Input Output System) are correct.

Try reformatting the partition and reinstalling LILO. You need to restore the lost data using an updated backup. But if you face some issues with the backup, you can use Linux Recovery applications.

If the problem persists, you should run fsck to check and correct any corruption issues.

Reformat the hard drive if fsck fails to fix file system problems and restore data from backup.

Linux Data Recovery software are robust applications that recover and restore lost data safely. Such software use powerful scanning algorithms to locate missing information. In addition, they provide interactive interface, automated recovery procedures and to-the-point documentation.

Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery is the premier Linux Recovery tool. The software comes with advanced features like RAW File Recovery, File Filter, File Mask, Create Image and more. It supports Ext2, Ext3 and ReiserFS file systems. It is compatible with almost all Linux distributions like Gentoo, Turbo Linux, SlackWare, SUSE etc.

HTC Touch Cruise 09

11:09 PM at 11:09 PM

The new HTC Touch Cruise is the first mobile phone HTC fingerprints to provide an application experience that people are constantly your special moments by creating a digital postcard there phone. Once captured, Footprints provides an opportunity, notes and an audio clip of the cafeteria or favorite place in the determination of its specific geographical location. In addition to identifying each postcard with their GPS coordinates, auto Footprints also name of each postcard with your location or area.

I'm glad that HTC isn't taking a step back and decided to incorporate the processor and memory of the Touch Diamond on the Touch Cruise 09. This device has a 256MB of RAM, and a 528MHz Qualcomm processor. It seems that the Touch Flo 3D has really matured ever since it was first introduced on the Touch Diamond. The TouchFlo 3D on the Cruise 09 is overall a smooth experience although there are still lags when you switch to the standard windows mobile interface but I blame that on Microsoft.

Now the main feature of the Touch Cruise 09 is the feature called HTC footprints. Basically, it's a pumped up version of the geotagging feature on some cameraphones. HTC Footprints lets you take pictures and then tag your location, add some notes, or add a voice memo. The tagging feature is actually pretty fast. Although I wonder if the HTC Footprints is just all gimmick. I mean, I'm not a social networking nut and I hardly use the geotagging features on my Omnia so I don't really see myself buying the Touch Cruise 09 just for the HTC footprints. However, I guess there are some people who might find the HTC footprints application useful, especially frequent travelers
