Computers are great when they are new. However, they can quickly turn into your biggest nightmare when they start running slow. And unfortunately, this is a problem which millions of people are having to put up with every day, thanks to a simple (but hidden) problem inside your PC.

There is a part of your computer system which is responsible for most of its slowness. It's called the 'registry' and is the most central part of Windows. The registry is a database which stores all your system files and settings, and is a very important part of your computer. It's so important, that Windows would literally not be able to run without it. And it's because of this importance, that actually makes your computer run slow. Here's why...

The registry is needed by Windows. It's got files inside it, which Windows reads "instructions" from, telling it to do certain things at certain times. The problem is that because your computer is reading these files non-stop, they actually become corrupt and damaged, over time. This is totally normal, but can spell disaster for your PC.

You see, because your computer cannot operate without these registry files, any delay in finding them will actually affect the speed of your PC. This is because your computer spends more time trying to find the missing files, which delays everything else. Over time, this problem gets worse and worse, as more and more files become missing or corrupt. It's the biggest reason as to why your computer is running slow, and is also very easy to fix.

To fix this problem (and speed up your PC), you simply need to clean out all the damaged files inside the registry. This is impossible for a human to do, because there are 100,000 files inside the database, but it's actually very easy for a registry cleaner to do. These registry cleaners are basically small pieces of software which scan through the entire registry database. They single out all the corrupt or missing files, and fix them all for you. * Your processor speed cannot keep up with the demands of your operating system or impedes daily tasks, like word processing, browsing the internet, and playing games.
* Your RAM is insufficient for your computing needs.
* You worry about security features, because your operating system is older and cannot use up-to-date anti-virus protection.
* You find that websites are not displaying properly on your aging monitor. (Note that you are likely increasing your energy bill and impacting the environment if your monitor is older.)
* You can no longer install new software and wish to use something that causes an error that reads "Operating System not supported" or your hardware causes similar messages.
* You cannot use newer peripherals, because there are no USB ports on your PC.
* You find that you've run out of storage space on your computer.

I Don't Want To Replace My Desktop Computer

However, one or more of these signs may not mean that these desktop computers need to be sent into the landfill sites. There are other solutions.

* Replace your processor. Even if your motherboard will not support the newest processors on the market, plenty of resale and refurbishment computer stores stock older motherboards and processors. You could increase your PC's abilities with an inexpensive, second hand processor.
* Increasing the RAM on your desktop computer can be an inexpensive fix. Most computers have extra slots available for just this purpose.
* Who says you can't just replace your monitor? All peripherals can be updated without going to the expense of an entirely new machine.
* Hard drives have dropped in price in recent years. Replacing your hard drive or adding a hard drive may solve your storage woes and extend the life of your machine.

Updating your desktop computers' processor, RAM, or hard drive may fix your computing woes.

Variety in Software

At one time, the majority of computing was done on Windows-based software, almost exclusively on Microsoft products. A small group, primarily graphics-intensive users, used Apple products and an even smaller group, mostly scientists and academics, used Unix for their computing needs. With the popularity in open source coding on the rise, a renewed interest in Apple products, and a growing population interested in Linux, the pendulum is swinging towards a variety for both operating systems and the software applications that go with them.

* The number of software programs that can be installed on a variety of operating systems has increased astronomically. In the past, Apple computer users were limited to a handful of programs available for that platform, limiting the market share for Apple users.
* Internet browsers were limited to one or two competitors, but there are many competitors for this market now, including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Chrome.
* Office suites were once limited to Microsoft Office and WordPerfect, with WordPerfect becoming a smaller and smaller market share. With open source coding, other options are emerging, including Google Docs, Zoho, and the most notable being OpenOffice, an entirely free package that is competing with Microsoft Office. 20% of OpenOffice users are now using this suite for work purposes, including some government offices.

Variety in Hardware

Computers have had similar pendulum swings in the popularity of their hardware, most notably in processors. At one time, all Microsoft computers relied on Intel processors and Apple computers, which were a much smaller share of the market, used Motorola processors. AMD began to compete with Intel for the market on Microsoft computers, making significant inroads during their fierce competition. A few years ago, another shift took place when Motorola was abandoned by Apple in favour of the Intel processor.

Competition and variety in computer hardware is not limited to processors, but processors are a good example of this competition, showing the swing in the marketplace and driving a portion of the technological advancement.

Why is Variety Healthy?

With variety in computer hardware and software, comes growth and new ideas in the marketplace. Not long ago, computers were functional for limited purposes and a limited time frame. As the newer models came out, the small portion of software available would cater to the new machines and it became harder to support older machines. Now that there are so many computers in use, software companies no longer cater solely to the latest and greatest, but rather the widest range of machines possible. In turn, these trends have opened up the market for resale, used, and wholesale computers and computer parts.

Why Hide My IP Address?

When you talk about the Internet and web hosting, IP Address is a term that gets unlimited mention. And then you hear about two specific types commonly involved in hosting, Shared and Static IP Address. While it doesn't necessarily take an expert to figure out the difference between the two, a basic understanding of how the Internet works goes a long way in explaining things.

All computers participating in any form of Internet activity are uniquely identified by a set of numbers they are assigned. Each time you type in a domain name on your browser's address bar, you are requesting information from a domain as a set of numbers. In the same way, that domain will return your requested information by using its own set of identifying numbers as well. In other words, when you talk of Internet communication, everything happens between these sets of numbers with which a source computer and a destination computer are uniquely identified with. This unique set of numbers assigned to each computer is called an IP address.

This basic information about IP addresses will now make it possible to differentiate between Shared IP and Static IP. A Shared IP is one that is used by more than one site on the Internet while a Static IP address is one that is used by a single site. If you type in a Static IP on your browser's address bar, you will be directed to the site which owns that Static IP, but if you enter a Shared IP, you'll get to a server but not to the domain you want because this server wouldn't know which particular site you're trying to connect to.

The question is, why would you secure a Static IP and why would you be fine with a Shared IP? Basically, there is only one reason why a Static IP would be necessary - to secure sensitive information. With a Static IP, this information enters and leaves your site in coded form to avoid interception. Obviously, this is the IP address that makes e-commerce possible as well communication between government agencies and other institutions that handle confidential data.

The unfortunate truth is, whether you're using Shared or Static, hackers could still wreak havoc on your system just by detecting your IP address. The Internet itself was created to detect IP addresses because this is how communication within the network is possible. However, the technology will not limit your ability to protect yourself when surfing. And your best weapon against hackers is to hide your IP address. Hiding your IP will make it impossible for anyone to even know you're even there. And when they don't know you're there, you can go from one website to another without leaving a trail that could be traced back to you.

Dell Studio XPS 13

The Dell XPS M1330 was a major success in lates 2007 and revitalized the Dell brand name in the eyes of consumers. The Studio XPS 13 proves that Dell has come a long way since the boring gray laptops from previous years. They’ve taken the sleek lines and brushed aluminum accents from the XPS line and combined it with the multimedia features and a few chassis design elements from the Studio line to create a solid mobile notebook. Unlike the larger 16-inch Studio XPS 16, the Studio XPS 13 is designed for people who need to keep their laptop with them at all times … but need the same high performance found in larger notebooks.

The Studio XPS 13 does a surprisingly good job balancing mobility with solid design and construction. As mentioned above, the Studio XPS 13 takes several design elements from the XPS M1330: the wedge-shaped profile, drop hinge, slot-loading optical drive, and touch-sensitive media buttons are all hallmarks of the XPS M1330. That said, the new Studio XPS 13 is thicker and heavier than the older 13-inch notebook.

The one design element I have mixed feelings about is the bottom access panel. Rather than have the typical RAM cover, hard drive cover, and main panel on the bottom of the notebook, the Studio XPS 13 uses a single, massive panel that provides access to all of the notebook at once. While this is helpful for those people who want to make multiple modifications or service their notebook it also means you have to remove 10 screws from the bottom of the notebook just to upgrade the RAM.

LILO Errors and Descriptor Table Corruption

LILO or LInux LOader is the standard boot loader used for Linux systems. Irrespective of the file system type, it can be placed in boot sector of partition or MBR. When you start the system and LILO loads, it performs a series of steps and displays the word 'LILO'. With each letter you see on the screen, it implies that it has successfully completed a task. But if LILO fails at some point, you find that the complete word 'LILO' is not displayed and hence you can't boot Linux and access your data. To restore the lost data, you need to use a recent data backup. However, if data backup is not available, invalid or not up-to-date, Linux Data Recovery solutions can be used to extract the lost or inaccessible data.

Consider a scenario, you start the Linux system and the boot process halts with three letters 'LIL' on the screen. After the occurrence of this issue, you can't boot the Linux system.

Cause

You should first verify that disk parameters in BIOS (Basic Input Output System) are correct.

Try reformatting the partition and reinstalling LILO. You need to restore the lost data using an updated backup. But if you face some issues with the backup, you can use Linux Recovery applications.

If the problem persists, you should run fsck to check and correct any corruption issues.

Reformat the hard drive if fsck fails to fix file system problems and restore data from backup.
